    Art/Volunteer interns learn about the professional care of the Center's growing art collection in an office that functions similar to a museum registrar's office. They also work closely with Volunteer Services, which manages approximately 120 volunteers who support the work of the Center.

Overview

Art Collection/Volunteer Services is responsible for the professional care of The Carter Center's growing art collection, functioning similar to a museum registrar's office while also providing docent training. The Carter Center's art collection is an eclectic array of more than 1,600 paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and other decorative items from around the world. Some work projects are ongoing, such as accessioning new gifts and database maintenance. Certain projects occur seasonally and will vary according to the semester. In addition to working directly with the artwork, the art intern will also work closely with Volunteer Services assisting in the management of approximately 120 volunteers who support the work of the Center.

Number of Interns per Semester: 1

Expected Projects

  • Assist in registration and management of the Center's art collection
  • Maintain computerized and written records
  • Catalog new acquisitions as well as assist with inventory or appraisal
  • Work on installation and minor conservation of art
  • Collection research and appraisal assistance
  • Work on docent training materials

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in museum studies, anthropology, or art history
  • An interest in museum registration, education, and/or curatorial work
  • Advanced research skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience working with databases and digital photography is desirable
  • Precision and the ability to pay attention to detail is essential
